Thu, 08/30/2018 - 13:37

Graphic designers aren’t the only people who have been bitten by the logo bug. The fashion world is now swarmed with branding collaborations and logo-heavy designs. A single Supreme baby onesie might even cost you more than your college fund.

Poking fun at branding mania are the folks from New York-based digital agency Hello Velocity, who have created what is essentially ‘Wingdings’ for designers.

Hilariously named ‘Brand New Roman’, the free typeface is composed of 76 popular logotypes.

“‘Brand New Roman’ is the most corporate Corporate Font ever created!” the agency describes. “Now all your content can be sponsored content, and sponsored by everybody!”

The set is available for free in a regular monochrome style or as a color font, which is a pretty new system that’s currently only compatible with Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.

Have a preview of the amusing freebie and download it over at the ‘Brand New Roman’ site.

Lingerie Brand’s Sexy, Provocative Ad Shows You Why It’s Getting Hot In Here

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 13:37
[Click here to view the video in this article]

While British lingerie brand Figleaves bans airbrushing inside its latest ad campaign featuring models with natural curves and stretchmarks, British lingerie retailer Agent Provocateur looks to empower females with help from one extremely toned Teyana Taylor.

The American dancer and recording artist sizzles in Agent Provocateur’s latest commercial for its AW2018 ad campaign dubbed ‘The Power of Provocateur’.

According to Fashionista, Taylor did not follow any specific dance routine for the commercial. Instead, the artiste chose to freestyle along to Exile’s I Want To Kiss You All Over.

The impromptu choreography, which Taylor executes in the brand’s ‘yellow Anna set’ from its new season collection, boasts her remarkable skills and talent.

“It is hard to explain but [it] is all about chemistry and feelings,” Taylor comments inside a press release, adding that as soon as the music pumps in her ears, her body naturally goes with the flow.

Taylor expressed that she feels blessed to star inside the commercial, thereby following the footsteps of names such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Kylie Minogue.

“…[E]ach one of us has interpreted in her own way what is to be sexy in AP lingerie,” said the dancer.

Avocado Lovers, You Can Now Get Paid US$300 To Eat It Daily By US Researchers

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 13:37

Do you know what’s even better than eating avocados? Getting paid to do so.

Each of these four universities is recruiting 250 test subjects to consume avocados for research: Loma Linda University (LLU); Penn State University; Tufts University; University of California, Los Angeles.

The study aims to determine if consumption of the fruit can support the reduction of belly fat and weight loss.

“The study will examine whether eating one avocado per day reduces visceral adipose fat in the abdomen,” said Dr Joan Sabaté, Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at LLU, inside a press statement that further details the requirements for participants of the study.

Applicants must:

1. Be 25 years of age or older

2. Be willing to either eat one avocado per day for six months or eat only two avocados per month for the same period

3. Measure at least 40 inches around the waist if they are male, or

4. Measure at least 35 inches around the waist if they are female.

Successful candidates will be divided into a test group and a control group.

For the test group, participants will be given 16 avocados every two weeks. Each participant will have to consume one avocado daily throughout the six-month project.

For the control group, each participant must consume no more than two avocados each month throughout the same period.

By now, you’re probably thinking that it’s better to end up in the test group. Having foreseen this drear over potentially receiving less avocados, those in the control group will enjoy 24 avocados once the study is complete.

In return, participants will receive a free health screening from LLU and US$300. If you think you’re up for the job, sign up for participation in the study here.

Window manager like i3 with contexts

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:38

This post inspired me to create this one.

Do you guys know if there is any window manager similar to i3 capable of doing the following:

I would like to have window manager like i3 where you can change not only workspaces but with contexts as well.

By that I mean:

Context 1: Developing platform A

  • workspace 1: terminal
  • workspace 2: gvim for modifying the code of the platform A
  • workspace 3: browser instance pointing to the platform A
  • workspace 4: browser instance for searching online and documentation

Context 2: Supporting platform B

  • workspace 1: terminal
  • workspace 2: gvim for modifying the code of the platform B
  • workspace 3: browser instance to the platform B
  • workspace 5: browser for searching online and documentation

Context 3: Communications

  • workspace 1: terminal
  • workspace 2: mail client
  • workspace 3: skype
  • workspace 4: browser

Context 4: New project, here you give a name for the project and a project directory is created

  • workspace 1: terminal already pointing to the the project directory, git repo initialized for the directory
  • workspace 2: gvim already started pointing got the directory
  • workspace 3: browser ready for the project
  • workspace 4: browser ready for searching online

These are just some examples of the contexts to give you and idea.

The functioning of the window manager is just like i3 or very similar. I prefer tiling.

The contexts are independent and you can create, delete, save and restore them easily.

Switching between contexts is easy and you get a preview of what is running in the context.

You can name and rename the context. Maybe a short description can be added too.

If you reboot the system you should have the option of restoring the previous contexts.

When rebooting the contexts state is saved automatically.

It doesn't have to be a window manager written from scratch, if you think this can be done by putting together existing parts please feel free to suggest.

OPTASY: How Do You Restrict Access to Content in Drupal 8? 6 Modules That Will Do the Job for You

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22
How Do You Restrict Access to Content in Drupal 8? 6 Modules That Will Do the Job for You radu.simileanu Thu, 08/30/2018 - 08:09

We all love Drupal's granular permission and access control system! And yet: its life-saving hierarchy of user roles and permission levels is strictly for creation/editing content. Since Drupal wrongly assumes that all site visitors should be able to visualize all published content, right? But what if this default assumption doesn't suit your specific use case? What if you need to restrict access to content in Drupal 8?

… to limit users' access to certain content on your website? So that not all visitors should be able to see all published nodes.

In this case, Drupal's typical access control system for creating and editing content is not precisely the functionality that you need.

But there's hope!

How to use drupal_write_record for updating a custom table?

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22

I have created custom tables for my project and it works fine. I am able to insert values to it too. The insert code is as follows:

$my_query = db_query("SELECT to_date FROM table_name where to_date = '$to' "); $num_of_results_service = $my_query->rowCount(); if($num_of_results_service == 0 ) { try { $result1 = drupal_write_record('table_name', $value_array[$proj_title]); drupal_set_message('data saved successfully.'); } catch(Exception $e) { echo 'Message: ' .$e->getMessage(); } } else{ }

I want to add an else part where I want to update the record. How can I achieve this using drupal_write_record??

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22

How can I get user ID (not the current user) based on user custom parameters ?

My parameter is ORI, I would like to do something like

$user_id = getId('user_ori')

this would return the id of the concerned user, then show it in my view. I would like to do this in order to use the switch drupal, passing the $user_id as a parameter.

Where is the the full tokens list for a site in D8?

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22

In the meta-tag UI it uses tokens but only shows a small list of tokens that are relative to the site information rather than the full content tokens which it can use, in D7 there was an admin token page so you can check values.

Where is this in Drupal 8?

Clean URL pagination (rewrite ?page=parameter)

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22

One of my client works with an SEO agency and they ask me to remove the pagination parameter ?page=x (generated by the Views module) and rewrite it like this:

Is there a way to do it with Drupal? I don't see any option in the view or in Pathauto to do this.

Is it possible to handle this with a custom module or should I work with .htaccess file?

I've tried the Clean Pagination module but you have to manually set pages where clean pagination should work and the module doesn't seem to work properly.

Why are my search results not showing when I input any body text?

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22

Why my search result not showing when I input any body text ?

Are search results based on node title only?

I am creating a multilingual site with French and English languages.

Users should be able to search results by entering any text of a node whether its body text, taxonomy, subtitle and so on.

Unable to install core and modules on a new laptop [on hold]

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 12:22

I have a new laptop running on Windows 8.1 64-bit. I am using WAMP with Apache 2.4.9 and PHP 5.5.12.

Before installation, I created a database. I copied and renamed the settings.php file, and I installed Drupal. So far, I have never had a problem.

When I install modules, I get the following error message.

PDOException: SQLSTATE[HY000]: General error: 1030 Got error -1 from storage engine: TRUNCATE {cache_rules} ; Array ( ) in cache_clear_all() (line 167 of C:\wamp\www\xxx\includes\cache.inc).

The error is followed by the following error.

PDOException: SQLSTATE[42S02]: Base table or view not found: 1146 Table 'alleserin.cache_rules' doesn't exist: DELETE FROM {cache_rules} WHERE (expire <> :db_condition_placeholder_0) AND (expire < :db_condition_placeholder_1) ; Array ( [:db_condition_placeholder_0] => 0 [:db_condition_placeholder_1] => 1441699681 ) in cache_clear_all() (line 167 of C:\wamp\www\xxxx\includes\cache.inc).

It seems Drupal doesn't see the database anymore.

I am having this problem for days now. My old laptop crashed. I can't see which version of WAMP I had there. I used the same Drupal 7.39 and all modules I used were up-to-date. I had no problems there.

I have done many new installs, removed WAMP and the database tables. Every time the error occurs again, randomly, and I can't use the site anymore. I tried to clear cache, changed the engine from InnoDB to myIsam. I have tried to install Drupal using XAMMP. It happens everytime.

I'm really running out of ideas. Something must be wrong with my new laptop. I must be missing some package to make Drupal function normal.

Anybody having any idea?

Apple’s First-Gen, ‘Extremely Rare’ iPhone Prototype Goes On Auction

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 11:42

Image via eBay

When the iPhone was first introduced in 2007, it was ridden with issues and bugs. Today, it’s quite possibly the most recognized smartphone.

You’ll now be able to have an up-close look at one of the very few prototypes that started it all. A Portland-based seller on eBay has put up a pre-release version of the first-gen iPhone on auction.

At time of writing, the product has already amassed more than US$36,000 in bid price.

Per the description, the item is a working model from 2006, back when iPhone’s name wasn’t even coined yet; then, it was just known as ‘Project Purple’. It’s also “extremely rare” and is one of the only known first-gen iPhone prototypes to exist.

The test model comes with a “rare Apple engineer sticker” with a label that reads, “Ver 1.1.1,” and runs on several software like ‘OS X’.

At 0.32 pounds, it’s also heavier than the original iPhone, which weighs at roughly 0.3 pounds, and is equipped with “completely different internals” including an unalike battery and Wi-Fi system.

Unlike the China-produced iPhones of today, this device was apparently “handmade in Cupertino, California.”

Have a glimpse of Apple history in the images below and find out more over at the item’s listing page.

Finally, A Decent ‘Space Force’ Logo And Flag Design Surfaces Online…

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 11:42

Image via oleskalashnik / Shutterstock.com

It wasn’t long after Trump’s proposed ‘Space Force’ logos surfaced online earlier this month that internet users took it upon themselves to reimagine the design.

The suggested lineup of “unoriginal and juvenile-looking” logos for this outer space-focused military unit had sparked hilarious responses online, and even inspired a troll design by the Russian embassy.

While Bloomberg Businessweek did invite eight top designers, including Milton Glaser, to create logos for Trump’s ‘Space Force’, this latest entry that surfaced 20 hours ago on the flag-loving subreddit ‘r/vexillology’ could be one of the more appropriate entries thus far.

Posted by Reddit user ‘karanut’, this ‘Space Force’ seal concept has been described as “fit[ting] in very well with the other US military flags what with the bald eagle being present.”

This sentiment addresses one feedback that followed Trump’s proposed designs—that is, they did not sit well when placed in context and next to logos from the US Air Force, US Navy, Marine Corps, US Army, and Coast Guard.

Have a look at the design below. What do you think?

Mountain Dew Unwittingly Asks Scottish To Masturbate In Hilarious Ad Faux Pas

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 11:42

Image via Mejini Neskah / Shutterstock.com

Mountain Dew tried to put out a refreshing advert, but the intention behind its message ultimately went to a fizzle.

On Monday, the brand’s UK leg rolled out a GIF of a thirsty young man downing a bottle of the soda. While the imagery seems pretty innocuous, what amused internet users in Scotland was the choice of words in its tagline, which reads, “Epic thrills start with a chug.”

“Chug” is popular Scottish slang for masturbation. In layman’s terms, that’s akin to a steakhouse recommending eaters to, “beat the meat.”

To top it all off, the graphic is accompanied with a caption that says, “We didn’t choose the chug life, the chug life chose us. #DoTheDew.”

“You guys didn’t really consult anyone from Scotland on this UK-wide marketing campaign eh?” asks Twitter user ‘baseballscot’.

It’s also unclear what Mountain Dew UK meant by “epic thrills,” but it’s probably not referring to the kind you’re thinking of right now.

While Trump’s Walk Of Fame Star Risks Removal, Obama Gets Road Named After Him

Thu, 08/30/2018 - 11:42

Image via Evan El-Amin / Shutterstock.com

While US President Donald Trump’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star pends removal, former POTUS Barack Obama now has a road named after him.

The Los Angeles city council has voted to rename Rodeo Road—for added clarity, this is not the same as Rodeo Drive—to Obama Boulevard.

Mayor Eric Garcetti tweeted the news yesterday, “It’s official: our City Council has voted to rename Rodeo Road to Obama Boulevard! We’re thrilled that Angelenos and visitors will forever be reminded of the legacy of President @BarackObama when traveling across L.A.”

In 2008, Garcetti filled the shoes of California co-chair in Obama’s first presidential campaign. Then in 2017, Obama endorsed Garcetti for his reelection campaign. Obama has yet to respond to the news.

Meanwhile, Trump’s wrongly-colored American flag has been transformed by a designer into wearable merchandise that’s left one Twitter user so amused, he “laughed so hard [and] spit out [his] covfefe.”
